Comments:	The Phare des Baleines is part of a larger site that includes the lighthouse tower, an older tower, a museum about lighthouse history, gift shops, and a park that offers a rich cultural and scenic experience at the island's western tip. The Large Lighthouse, built in 1854, is 187 feet (57 meter) tall and has an ascent of 257 steps that provide an exceptional panorama of the Île de Ré and the ocean. The older Vauban Tower, built in 1682 and 99 feet (30 meters) tall, is an earlier, shorter tower built to serve both as a navigational aid and part of the island's defense system. The Lighthouse Museum details the evolution of lighthouses and navigation with interactive displays. <p> Hours of operation: Lighthouse and Museum Monday through Sunday: October to March 10.30 (10:30 am) to 17.00 (5:00 pm) <br> April to June 10.00 (10:00 am to 19.00 (7:00 pm) <br> July and August 09.45 (9:45 am) to 20.00 (8:00 pm) <br> September 10.00 (10:00 am to 19.00 (7:00 pm) <p> Admission: You do not have to pay admission to access the machine.
